Bicyclist Struck By Hit And Run Driver
HIGHLAND PARK (KDKA) --- It's been a difficult summer for cyclists in Pittsburgh. Just last month, two bikers were killed in separate accidents along Penn Avenue.
Tuesday night, a 60-year-old cyclist was struck from behind right in front of his home on North Euclid Avenue in Highland Park.
Witnesses say he was struck by a speeding Dodge Stratus.
"Shortly before the accident happened here, we received a number of calls in the Highland Park area of a car speeding around while hitting telephone poles and stop signs," Sergeant Michael Pilyih says.
One witness says the driver of the car paused momentarily after he hit the cyclist. He then struck a stop sign. The witness also recalls the cyclists legs entangled in his bike on the ground—his helmet nearby.
After hitting the cyclist, the driver sped off and struck several other vehicles.
The driver, said to be in his 20's, was taken into custody by police on the 7100 block of Butler Street. His identity is unknown.
The injured cyclist, who witnesses identify as a retired Pitt Professor, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
His identity and condition are unknown at this moment. However, the victim was speaking to detectives Tuesday night.
