Bicyclist Dies After Wilkinsburg Crash
POINT BREEZE (KDKA) – A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in Wilkinsburg Tuesday night.
According to police, the accident happened in the 7700-block of Penn Avenue near the border of the City of Pittsburgh around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Anthony Green, 48, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital after suffering a critical head injury in the accident where he later died.
Police say a woman driving an SUV tried to pass a bus and ended up hitting Green before crashing into a utility pole. The driver may not have had a current license.
In a statement reacting to the recent tragedies, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl is asking bicyclists and drivers to be extra cautious and that the city is working with safety activists at Bike Pittsburgh to improve traffic on Penn Avenue.
"More traffic enforcement on Penn," Scott Bricker with Bike Pittsburgh said. "Without a doubt, people go way above the speed limit there they weave in and out of traffic."
This is the second fatal accident involving a bicyclist on Penn Avenue in a week.
On July 25, 46-year-old James Price was killed in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Penfield Court and Penn Avenue.
"Another family and I know what they're going through – I know what they're going through," Glenice Price, the victim's mother, said of the most recent accident.
The family can't believe it's happened again.
"Something like this here – it hits your heart so fast," James Price, the victim's father, said.
Family members say Price had been riding his bike for exercise, trying to get back in shape.
No arrests have been made in connection with that accident at this time.
