Bethel Park Community Comes Together To Help Disabled Veteran
BETHEL PARK (KDKA) -- The Bethel Park community is responding to the plight of a disabled veteran who suffered severe burns in a fire at his home earlier this year.
Four months ago, 57-year-old Clyde Trout was severely burned from an explosion and fire that heavily-damaged the interior of his Bethel Park home.
In a show of support, friends and neighbors held a fundraiser today at John McMillan Presbyterian Church.
"He is basically disabled now because of it; probably won't be able to work again because he's losing some of the range of motion in his hands and his arms, and he did lose part of his eyesight," said Bryan Rudolph, Trout's friend.
Trout is recovering in a nursing home after suffering third-degree burns on over 50 percent of his body. He has undergone numerous skin grafts and could not attend the fundraiser for health reasons.
The 20-year veteran of the Marines, who fought in four major wars, has no family in the area. But Pamela Rudolph is hoping the community will rally behind him through the dinner and silent auction.
"We're hoping to raise $10,000 that will keep him in his house in Bethel Park for three years with the taxes," she said. "In the meantime, his veterans' benefits… are still pending."
The insurance company rebuilt the interior of Trout's home, but he still needs a roof.
Friends say Trout is always willing to help others while never asking for anything return. He recorded a video message thanking everyone for coming to his assistance.
"This is just very overwhelming for him that all the people, community are coming through to help him," Pamela said.
"Today's love and outpouring of all the people here is really showing him and giving him the strength to recover," added Bryan.
