Best Parks For Kids In Pittsburgh

Looking for a place to spend the day outdoors with the kids? Here are some of Pittsburgh's best kid-friendly parks, some offering interesting wildlife ranging from wild turkeys to penguins.

Schenley Park Visitors Center

A destination for university students, outdoor enthusiasts and business people, Schenley Park is also a great spot to take the kids due to its 456 acres of hiking trails and woods, clearly-marked paths and abundant water fountains located throughout, all within reach of the city. There are also fun activities within the park including yearly car shows and a seasonal ice rink flush with families.

Point State Park

Point State Park is an urban oasis located between the Three Rivers and the Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne Bridges. An underground river feeds the recently-renovated fountain. Bring a picnic for the whole family while you watch the highway, river and rail traffic pass you by.

Phipps offers an educational experience in landscapes from around the world. Rooms divided by climate and location offer everything from rain forest to desert climates provide information and beauty making a good place to take kids who might have an interest in travel, botany, or both. Plus, Garden Railroad with the world's first displayed garden railroad is back through March 13.

Visit this sculpture-filled park between downtown and Polish Hill and you will be pleasantly surprised by the collection of unusual works by contemporary artists, and perhaps a flock of wild turkeys which have become visitors in recent years.

National Aviary

The National Aviary is a fun and fairly inexpensive ($13/Adults, $11/Child) way to spend the day with the kids. The birds are very people friendly and have been known to perch on benches in close proximity to visitors, so prepare for a near-interactive experience. Watch a parrot paint for you or touch a penguing at Penguin Point. Children must be at least six years of age to attend some of these activities.
