Police Investigating Shooting, Crash In Beltzhoover

BELTZHOOVER (KDKA) -- Police are investigating a situation that involved a shooting and a multi-vehicle crash in Beltzhoover that left five people, including a child, injured on Monday evening.
It all started around 5:30 p.m.
First, there was the sound of gunfire, then a couple of blocks away, screeching tires from a car speeding down Beltzhoover Avenue near East Warrington Avenue, then came the crash.
Investigators say the impact led to chaos.
"It crashed into a light pole, hit a parked, unoccupied vehicle, and another vehicle that contained a family - a husband, wife and child," said Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler.
The family was in the car in the middle. Neighbors ran to help a female driver who was on the ground after the crash and got her to safety.
"I seen a lady laying on the ground across the street from me," said one neighbor who wasn't identified. "She tried to get up, and I told her, 'No, just stay there.' I rubbed her hand and laid her there, and said, 'Don't move until paramedics come.'"
She was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, and at last check was listed in stable condition. The man and child in the car with her suffered minor injuries.
The unoccupied car was pushed into the telephone pole by the impact.
As neighbors helped the family, the driver of the speeding car took off and later collapsed on Climax Street near Curtin Avenue. Both he and his passenger were transported with gunshot wounds to the back. They were last listed in critical but stable condition.
Downed wires fell into leaking fuel, and first responders told everyone to back away.
"It's pretty concerning. You can see all the kids out at this time of day," said neighbor Kim Kirsch. "There's kids getting off their school buses from after-school activities."
Police are continuing to investigate.
"So we're going to try to talk to as many as we can, look at surveillance video and put together a bigger picture of what happened," Toler said.
Several blocks were roped off into Monday night while police investigated at the scene.
