Beechview Residents Still Digging Out From Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - There was a wide range when it came to snowfall totals in western Pennsylvania.

Some places saw a few inches, while others saw double-digits accumulations.

Oil City reported 14 inches, while places in Washington County had only two inches of snow.

It's been 24 hours since the snowflakes started to fly. Downtown Pittsburgh looks like it's in pretty good shape.

However, the issue is the side streets. Places like Beechview say it's a whole different story.

"Haven't seen any. They will probably be out on the main streets where all the traffic happens, but that's pretty much where they will go," Rachel Birtko said.

Birtko and her family worked to dig out their car on Thursday. She's never lived anywhere but Westfield Street in Beechview.

In 2010, the family had to move out of their home during the February storm because they had no power and couldn't get off their street.

Down the street, Sean McIntyre just moved

"I have heard it doesn't get salted too well, but today it doesn't seem to be too bad. So, I am hoping to get out and get to work," McIntyre said.

Rich Vickers has lived on Westfield Street since 1968 and has seen many storms come and go. He thinks the city is doing the best it can.

"Now with the holiday, you probably are going to have a skeleton crew. I have an appreciation for what they have to do. They've got to open up the main roads first," Vickers said.

The biggest challenge on the hilly streets in Beechview is if you don't get salt down, it gets to be a problem.

You can plow all you want, but without the salt, it literally becomes a downhill skating rink.
