Baseball Cap Leads To Arrest In 2008 Shooting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - DNA evidence and a recent DUI arrest have led investigators to a suspect in the 2008 shooting death of a man in a local hotel parking lot.
Allen Austin was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn on Banksville Road back in August of 2008.
Police said they had little to go on while investigating the case except for a baseball cap that was found at the scene.
So, they took DNA from the cap and waited for a match.
Then, last month, 21-year-old Tyrone Swan went to jail in a driving under the influence case.
When authorities ran his DNA through a CODIS data bank, they say they came up with a match to the ball cap in the Austin case.
Swan's attorney says there's no evidence presented as to where the cap was found.
However, prosecutor Mark Tranquilli said that in addition to the cap, there is an eyewitness that also identified Swan.
Swan was held for trial after a preliminary hearing Friday morning. He remains in the Allegheny County Jail.
