Bart Scott Talks Michael Sam, League's Readiness
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Former Baltimore Raven Bart Scott is now on the CBS NFL pregame show, "The NFL Today," and he joined Starkey and Mueller to talk about his new gig as well as the league trying to crack down on racial slurs used on the field and whether or not players are ready for Michael Sam.
When it comes to cracking down on racial slurs used on the field, you can count Scott among those who thinks this won't work in execution.
"Any time you can have a numerous amount of African American players around there, how are you going to tell where it came from?" he says.
Scott also pointed out the hypocrisy on the league's part when it comes to this proposed rule given the name of the team in Washington.
"How can we have this conversation about a derogatory term when dealing with African American players and the African American experience without talking about the name Redskins? Which it seems like the commissioner wants to avoid at all costs," he added.
We also talked about Michael Sam entering the NFL as the first openly gay player and whether or not Scott thinks the locker room is ready for this.
"This wouldn't be the first gay teammate, I know I played with some guys I believed was gay. At the end of the day, I think people think that football players are neanderthals," said Scott. "I think that people think that athletes can't adjust and evolve and think we're some neanderthals that pound our chest and walk around with a club like Bam-Bam, but I think we're a little more sophisticated than people give us credit."
Scott also weighed in on the hit he put on Ben Roethlisberger a few years ago, which the Steelers quarterback still calls the hardest he's ever taken, as well as his rivalry with Hines Ward.
