Man Likely To Face Charges After Beechview SWAT Situation
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The SWAT team was called to a domestic situation in the city's Beechview neighborhood Monday morning.
It was a frightening situation for a woman. According to public safety officials, her ex-boyfriend showed up and was acting violently. She was able to escape and called 911.
Police, the SWAT team and other emergency officials were lined up on a narrow Dawn Avenue for hours while the situation unfolded.
"I've never seen something like that. There was so many SWAT and police," said Mark Nickel, a neighbor.
People who live in the area say they were shaken up, as they listened to police try to communicate with the man barricaded in the home.
"You hear one, then another one, and then you hear, 'bang, bang,' again," said Nickel.
Negotiators attempted to communicate with the man, but he refused to leave the house. Investigators say he threatened his own life.
"Operators had to use tactical means to gain access to the residence and some gas, and K-9s were deployed," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Cara Cruz said.
The woman was not seriously hurt, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Neighbors tell KDKA, for this small area of Beechview, activity like this is unusual.
"It's like 12 homes back here. It's nice and secluded. Real private, especially being in the city too," Nickel said.
The man was first taken to hospital to be checked out. He is expected to face charges and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
