Bail Reduced For Homewood Bakery Robbery Suspect
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man arrested in connection with a bakery robbery in Homewood last month has had his bail reduced.
After a bail hearing, the family of Deandre Brown is more likely to gain his temporary freedom. His bail was reduced from more than $100,000 to $10,000.
However, he has a longer term battle in claiming his innocence.
The armed robbery happened at Dana's Bakery on North Homewood Avenue in September.
A few days later, police arrested 26-year-old Deandre Lee Brown based in part on an alleged getaway car traced to Brown.
But since then, the defense came into possession of a surveillance tape from The Carnegie in Oakland.
Brown works as a security guard at the Homewood branch and was required to be at the Oakland Main Building for a mandatory training session that day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The man in the video enters the employee entrance at 2:07 p.m. And he reappears at 2:10 p.m. and goes back in.
The robbery in Homewood happened between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. The defense says they have more than just the video.
"We have the video, we have a sign-in sheet, we have an alibi witness, we have a supervisor who assigned our client to go to that mandatory training session," said Patrick Nightingale, the defense attorney.
His lawyers say if you can't make out his face in the video, his size 14 sneakers are pretty obvious.
He was originally charged with a firearms violation as a fugitive, but the defense intends to refute that as well.
Here's their account of his days after the robbery before his arrest:
"He woke up at his grandmother's house, he went to work at his two jobs, he came home, he spent time with his kids. Hardly a hardened criminal on the lam," said Daniel Muessig, a defense attorney. "He purchased the gun legitimately on Sept. 12. We have the paperwork for it. That was the first thing his family brought to us from the jump was the paperwork."
The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office says it is reviewing the evidence presented by the defense.
