Baby Injured, Father To Be Cited After Airborne Car Crashes Over Hillside
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A baby was injured after a car crash Friday afternoon.
The red Chevy Cavalier soared over a flight of stone steps on a hillside, landing in a backyard just before 12 p.m. Friday.
"They flew, they flew. I don't know how fast they were going around this turn here," said neighbor Tony Santana.
Coming down Faronia Street, - the turn was onto Ladoga Street in Sheraden.
"The speed limit's 25, but they go a lot faster than 25, which is obviously what he was probably doing," said Bob Yerman, another neighbor.
Behind the wheel was 38-year-old Richard Davis of Chartiers City.
KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson: "What was it like flying over that hill?"
Davis: "I don't even know, man. I don't know. I'm just so upset right now."
Also riding in the car was Davis's daughter-in-law, his niece and his 8-month-old daughter, Ricki Lynn. She was buckled into an infant seat, but the seat was not secured.
"We were trying to figure out if they were okay. They said, 'we're okay.' But once I saw the baby, we said we gotta call 911," said Santana.
The child appeared to have cuts and scratches on her neck and head.
Arriving paramedics took the little girl to Children's Hospital. The other passengers appeared to have minor injuries.
Davis will be given multiple citations. He had no driver's license, no insurance and his child was not properly secured.
Davis told police at the scene that he swerved to avoid hitting something in the road. What that something might have been is unclear. Police have not been able to confirm it.
