Baby Boy Born On Parkway East
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Dave Highland was on a mission Friday morning on the Parkway East.
He left his home in in Plum Boro. His wife Dana, sitting beside him in the truck, was in labor.
"So he kept saying, 'we're almost there! We're almost there! We're almost there!'
"And I'm like, 'I'm not going to make it!'" Dana said.
But it soon became clear that the baby was now in the driver's seat and UPMC Mercy Hospital seemed very far away.
"So I thought, 'Maybe it's coming, but we have some time,'" Dave said.
"They asked if the head was there and I looked and I felt and the head was there already," Dana said. "So, just one more push and he was out."
On the cell phone, 9-1-1 Dispatch instructed the couple to pull over.
"When your wife is holding your baby as you're going down the Parkway – it's time to pull over," Dave said.
It was about that time that a Wilkinsburg police sergeant arrived to find a brand new baby wrapped in daddy's shirt.
"I think he's really cute," 5-year-old David said while cuddling his new brother.
Surrounded by family, Dominic Gerald Highland, weighing 7-pounds, 13-ounces was getting constant kisses.
His 2-year-old sister, Delaney, was sacked out after all the excitement.
Dominic's Auntie presented him with a bib boasting his special delivery and a new shirt for dad that reads: "I can lay carpet, install a furnace, rebuild a motor and deliver a baby on the Parkway East."
