Police Take Suspect Into Custody After Surrounding Building
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- Police and the SWAT team have taken a man into custody after surrounding a medical office building in Monroeville this afternoon following a domestic situation and pursuit on the Parkway East.
According to emergency officials, police were called to the domestic incident this morning; however, when they arrived at the scene the suspect fled in a vehicle.
Authorities say the pursuit started in Penn Hills and onto the outbound Parkway East. The suspect reportedly threw away a gun along the way.
KDKA's Paul Martino reports from the scene that the suspect abandoned his vehicle, and then went into the medical office building at the intersection of Ivanhoe Drive and Monroeville Boulevard.
He was taken into custody this afternoon and authorities have identified him as Ryan Gomez of Penn Hills.
Officials at the scene say he was found hiding on the second floor in the ceiling tiles.
Dozens of patients and medical staff had to be evacuated from the building.
"As soon as I got here to be hooked up for a non-stress test cause I'm 37 weeks [pregnant] and have high blood pressure, they came in and told us that he was in the building," said Jenny Repzik, a patient.
Everyone was able to make it out of the building safely.
The SWAT team along with several police departments including State Police, Allegheny County Police and Monroeville Police were called to the scene to search the building.
Gomez was initially wanted on a domestic abuse charge.
