Authorities Stepping Up Security At Penn State Ahead Of Game

STATE COLLEGE (KDKA) -- It's been an emotional week on the Penn State campus and police there are making plans for Saturday's game against Nebraska.

The game comes just days after the firing of long-time head coach Joe Paterno and the riots that followed. It is also the last home game of the season.

There was a noticeable increase in security in State College Thursday night.

There were police on horseback, police with helmets stationed along the streets, an army of state troopers showed up and a huge antenna was erected to take a video feed from a helicopter flying overhead.

The message was loud and clear to students out and about last night, and everything remained calm unlike Wednesday night when a riot broke out after news that Paterno had been fired.

A television station truck was flipped on its side, light poles were ripped down, a few officers were hit by rocks.

As for security at Saturday's game, extra state police will be brought in. The State College police say it is normal procedure to have a high level of security for games.

"We always gear up and increase man power and details for every Penn State home game and nothing different is being done this time," said Cpt. John Gardner, of State College Police.

"Every available officer, detective will be working in some form or capacity this weekend."

Meanwhile, Nebraska's chancellor says he is confident everyone will be safe after concerns about safety for their team and fans.
