Greensburg Woman Killed, 2 Others Injured In Salem Twp. Crash

DELMONT (KDKA) -- A Greensburg woman was killed and two others were injured when officials say the car she was driving was struck by another vehicle Thursday afternoon in Westmoreland County.

The crash happened just after 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 22 and Scenic Drive in Salem Township near the Gene & Boots Candies shop.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as 39-year-old Amanda Ciccarelli of Greensburg. She was pronounced dead at the scene just before 5:20 p.m.

The men in the other car have been identified as Brandon Thiem, 25, of Derry Township, and Sean Schantz. They both suffered injuries.

One was flown from the scene by a medical helicopter and the other was taken away by ambulance. Schantz is in serious condition at Allegheny General Hospital. Thiem was first taken to Latrobe Hospital but was later transferred to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

"When I talked to 911, they said, 'Well, is there anyone hurt?'" said Tom Drecht, the co-owner of the Beer Barn, a nearby business. "And I said, 'I can't imagine someone isn't hurt.'"

The sound of the violent crash was unmistakable.

"It was about 4:30, we were packing candy and we heard a large bang," Donna McCracken, a Gene & Boots Candies employee.

McCracken was working at Gene & Boots Candies store, a few 100 yards from the site of the Route 22 rush hour wreck.

"A young lady came in and asked for a fire extinguisher because the cars were on fire and she said there was entrapment," McCracken said.

The accident happened in the eastbound lane of Route 22. According to the Coroner's Office, Ciccarelli had made a left turn onto Scenic Drive when her car was hit on the passenger side by another vehicle traveling eastbound on Route 22.

"There was a lot of bystanders here when we got here," said Assistant Chief Steven Rosatti, of Forbes Road Volunteer Fire Department. "They were tending to the two patients lying on the ground."

The Beer Barn sits across the highway from the crash site.

"I was sitting in here talking to someone, I heard a thud," said Drecht. "And I know that sound. I've heard it many times before."

Traffic was backed up for several miles as police and firefighters cleared the highway of the wreckage.

There's word yet on the cause of the crash.
