Aspinwall Borough Boil Water Advisory Extended To Friday
ASPINWALL (KDKA) - A Boil Water Advisory for Aspinwall Borough has been extended to Friday:
This will continue until at least 3:00pm Friday. It is DEP protocol, for loss of positive pressure in water lines, that samples are to be tested consecutively, over the span of two days. Though it is very inconvenient we are leaning to the side of caution. You can use the water for everyday things (ie showering, washing and laundry). We just ask that you boil your water for drinking or cooking.
It was already extended once after some routine maintenance turned into a bigger problem in the early morning hours.
Most residents noticed something was wrong with their first flush of the morning.
"It just sounded like an explosion, and I turned around just filled with brown, rusty water in the toilet," said Aspinwall resident Peggy Santelli.
Not that anyone had to tell Santelli and her daughter and grandchildren not to drink the water. Word of the Boil Water Advisory came by 6 a.m.
"I drink bottled water anyway, so I have quite a supply of bottled water, and just make it work," she said.
Borough Manager Melissa O'Malley says when they woke up to no water or little pressure on Wednesday morning, there was no doubt what had to be done.
"When we have anything that is a low pressure or no pressure, we then had to do the Boil Water Advisory because bacteria could build up in the lines," she said.
Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority says it was doing routine maintenance overnight and shut down the pump that feeds Aspinwall, but then couldn't get it restarted for three hours.
There's water pressure now, but testing requires the boil advisory to remain in effect for at least 24 hours, which is tough for places like Sam's Tavern in the Wall.
"We can't use our soda guns," said the tavern's Sam Sieber. "We have to buy bottled or canned pop. And, again, the dishware, the silverware has to be plastic and paid for."
