Arena Box Office Deserted As Playoff Tickets Go On Sale
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Hockey playoffs are just around the corner and after Tuesday night's win over the New Jersey Devils, the Penguins are in a good position to get home ice advantage for round one.
However, very few people showed up at the CONSOL Energy Center when playoff tickets went on sale this morning.
Even when the Penguins were winning the Stanley Cup in '91 and '92, they never managed to sell out every regular season home game. They've now done that four straight years.
The love of hockey is incredible in Pittsburgh; however, looking at the box office today, you would think nobody cares because only one person showed up to buy playoff tickets.
"To be honest, I'm not really that big a fan, but the girl I am dating is a huge fan and I'm trying to make her happy," said Tom Maxwell, of Penn Hills.
This will be Maxwell's first game in the Penguins' new home. He arrived 90 minutes early to buy two tickets in person. Turns out though, he was the only person waiting in line.
"It's just a whole different atmosphere, it's just unbelievable. Fans get way more into it," said Mike Tauro, a CONSOL Energy Center employee. "It's awesome."
There was one woman who came to the box office, but she was buying circus tickets.
This doesn't mean there will be empty seats when the playoffs start. It's just that instead of buying them in person, people buy them online -- and all hope to see a guy named Crosby back in action.
"From what I've seen, he's been looking good. I'm hoping he can make a comeback, but I haven't really heard anything. I'm just hoping he comes back for the playoffs," added Tauro.
In the quest for the Stanley Cup, we don't even know who the Pens are going to play in the first round. It's a long shot, but they still could grab the overall number one spot in the Eastern Conference.
