Area Public Works Crews Cleaning Up After Severe Weather
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Public Works crews around the area are working to clean up after severe weather moved through the area Thursday night.
A huge pile of broken tree branches, uprooted trunks and downed power lines took over the intersection of Guarino and Hobart Roads in Squirrel Hill in the aftermath of the storms.
"It almost sounded like a lot of hail and a lot of heavy thunder, but I did not know a tree actually came down until I woke up and saw the tree on the car," Squirrel Hill resident Nicole Zellie Lann said.
Zellie Lann is relieved her property wasn't affected by Mother Nature.
"Thank goodness it didn't hit my car and thank goodness we're safe and I hope everyone else is safe as well," Zellie Lann said.
Duquesne Light sent a troubleshooter to take a look at the downed lines. Public Works crews can't remove the mess until the lines are taken care of.
The eastern side of the city had a lot of power outages like an intersection in Schenley Park.
However, Duquesne Light expects to have the majority of power turned back on by noon Friday. The same goes for West Penn Power. The majority of their outages hit Washington County.
Downed trees weren't the only damage in Squirrel Hill. A trampoline was destroyed despite it being tied down to the porch and fence.
In Mt. Lebanon, residents had quite the scare.
"I was looking out the window and the end of the tree flipped up out of the Earth. The burst continued to drive the tree towards the house," Mt. Lebanon resident Bill Cooper said.
In Carrick, a swimming pool took a good beating.
"I came out and I was like, 'Holy smokes my pool is flipped.' I was like, this never happens," Carrick resident Melissa Beavers said.
The T's Dormont Junction was also shut down after the metal roof blew off and landed on trolley cables. It reopened Friday morning.
