Apple Set To Release Newest iPhone

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- Apple's new iPhone 5 rose up onto the stage on a pedestal as a company executive showed off the smartphone's new features.

The new iPhone features a larger 4-inch display, a taller, slimmer design, longer battery life, a faster processor, and 4G LTE for quicker data speeds.

One of the most significant changes is a new connector to attach the iPhone to other brands of computers and chargers.

Apple will offer an adapter so it can plug into older accessories.

"The good news is it will cost the same as the iPhone 4S it replaces," says Phil Schiller, Apple's Senior VP of Marketing.

The iPhone 5 will cost between $199 and $399.

Apple says the iPhone 5 is now the world's slimmest smart phone.

The phone is about 18 percent thinner than the last iPhone and weighs about 20 percent less.

Tech writer Scott Stein has been covering Apple for eight years and says the allure of the iPhone hasn't faded.

"I think in the beginning it was its futurism, but I think now what makes it attractive is its ease of use and its consistency," Stein says.

The original iPhone spawned a new market for smart phones but competitors have been working to close the gap.

"It seems that the iPhone's mission is staying consistent to a brand identity, staying consistent to a look and feel, but taking further forward each time so it does feel fresh and interesting," Stein says.

Apple is scheduled to release its iPhone 5 on September 21st.
