Anti-Culling Protesters Demonstrate At Mt. Lebanon Meeting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – People who are against Mount Lebanon's controversial plan to thin the deer herd in their community made their voices heard during a commissioners' meeting and protest on Monday night.
"Are we going to round up the mice in Mount Lebanon and shoot them?" Glenda Graves, a Mount Lebanon homeowner, said during a commissioner's meeting Monday evening where the controversial deer "trap and kill" program was debated.
As the meeting was going on, protestors picketed at the Municipal Building on Washington Road.
Graves wondered aloud if rabbits would be next on animal reduction list.
Mount Lebanon Commissioners have already given their okay to the deer control program, aimed at reducing the local deer population in the South Hills community by about 150 animals.
The project price tag - as much as $75,000. The state has also given the plan the green light.
Mount Lebanon officials say the signs warning of the deer traps are now in six local parks, but three traps have to be relocated because of their proximity to schools.
The possibility of shooting more deer on private property in the municipality is now also under review.
