Animal Activists Protest At Heinz Field Over Vick Signing
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There was a sizable protest Thursday evening across from Heinz Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers final preseason game by animal activists upset by the Michael Vick signing.
At least 150 people carrying signs stood silently behind wooden barricades set up by the police.
Vick served time in prison for helping to run a dogfighting ring.
"What they did to those dogs is unconscionable, and I think the Rooneys are misjudging the type of people who live here in Pittsburgh. We don't go for that," said Pat Carlson, of Beechview.
"This is about remembering the animals that were terrorized, maimed and murdered that didn't have a choice," Monica George, of New Kensington, said.
Of course, there were also Vick supporters, and a few of them also had signs.
"No one is saying anything positive about what Michael Vick is doing at this point, and like he stated, he paid his debt to society. I mean forgive him," said Renarda Walker, of the Hill District.
"We just want people to forgive," added Nathan Oakes, a Vick supporter. "Why hold on to such negativity? The guy served his time."
About 20 Pittsburgh Police officers were stationed near the protest to make sure there were no problems.
