Angie's List: Attic Insulation
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Keeping your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer has a lot to do with your insulation.
According to Angie's List, taking a look around your attic can be a money saver.
When Suzanne Rees moved into a 40-year-old home back in December, she noticed a temperature difference with the top level compared to the basement and main level.
"There was a noticeable difference, so we felt like the attic insulation upstairs may not be adequate," said Rees.
Taking a look around the attic to see if you have enough insulation may be worth the trip.
"A properly insulated attic can reduce your energy costs by 10 to 20 percent," says Angie Hicks, of Angie's List.
But how do you know if you have enough insulation in your attic?
"Insulation can deteriorate over time, so it's important for you to check it periodically," said Hicks. "A good rule of thumb is if you can see the floor joists, you don't have enough insulation."
Here's another bonus, you can get up to $500 in tax credits for adding something like insulation to your home to make it more energy efficient.
