Ambulance, Car Collide In Westmoreland County, 4 Injured
SALEM TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - An ambulance was involved in a crash that sent four people to the hospital.
The crash happened around 3 a.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of Route 22 in Salem Township, Westmoreland County. It appeared the ambulance smashed into the side of a car.
The look of the wreckage was difficult to stomach. An ambulance from John Carroll Area EMS in Altoona and a white Toyota were involved in the crash. State police out of Kiski Valley is handling the investigation, but they aren't sure at this time how the crash happened.
Fire crews responded to the westbound lanes right away.
"We had an update from the ambulance crew that was involved that there was entrapment in one of the vehicles. The fire department that got on scene extricated one patient out of the vehicle," Fire Chief Bob Rosatti from Forbes Road Volunteer Fire Department said.
The driver of that car is a 36-year-old man. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. There were four people in the ambulance.
Police say the driver was a 19-year-old man who refused treatment. The ambulance was transporting a 7-month-old baby girl at the time of the crash. She and her mother, who was also in the ambulance, were taken to the hospital to be treated as was a female medic.
At this point, we don't know the extent of their injuries. Crews spent hours reconstructing the scene before re-opening Route 22 westbound to traffic.
Our sister station WTAJ-TV in Altoona says John Carroll EMS is a local nonprofit EMS service that is based out of Carrolltown in Cambria County.
Police believe the ambulance could have been heading to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
