Woman Hospitalized After Explosion Levels Greene Co. Home And Business
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (KDKA) - The state police fire marshal's office is investigating an explosion that leveled a home and business in Greene County.
The Waynesburg fire chief says the explosion happened around 4:45 Thursday morning at the home on Water Dam Road. It's also the site of the homeowner's business, Alpha Graphics and Signs.
KDKA's Lisa Washington spoke with the Waynesburg fire chief who says when the first firefighters arrived, both homeowner were already outside.
Firefighters rushed to the scene, and worked to put out flames, although the home was already leveled.
The fire chief says the wife who lives at the home had burn injuries on her arm, and was rushed to a local hospital, then transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital.
The chief says it's too early to tell what could have caused the explosion, but it looks like it may have started in a basement.
The challenge for firefighters was getting water to the scene.
"Out here, we're in the country. The nearest water is probably three, four miles away," explained Waynesburg Fire Department Chief Jeff Marshall. There was a lot of departments here, manpower wasn't an issue, just getting the water in and out of the scene to deal with what was going on."
There's no word on the extent of the woman's injuries.
The state fire marshal will spend most of the day at the site, trying to determine what happened.
