Accidents, Slick Spots Build Up Due To Storm
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Rain has moved into the area and temperatures are hovering around freezing. While it has not changed to freezing rain, the potential to do so remains for a few more hours.
On the South Side, the rain has been coming and going for much of the morning, but there's no major freezing.
That didn't stop the city from issuing a Phase 1 Snow Emergency Alert.
Public Works crews are working 12-hour shifts and every piece of equipment is out in snow mode.
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said the city is preparing for the worst ice accumulation of an already bad winter.
In the event of power outages, warming centers are open in Pittsburgh. As of 7:30 a.m., Duquesne Light had no major power outages to report.
In addition, PennDOT has been out all night treating the highways to prevent ice from building up.
North of the city, some slick spots have built up.
As of 7 a.m., there were two accidents on Interstate 79.
A tractor-trailer jackknifed on the northbound side near Zelienople around 6 a.m.
Later, one vehicle crashed on the southbound side near the Wexford exit.
In Beaver County, a slushy mixture has built up in some areas. KDKA's Heather Abraham reported that the roads were mostly wet, but there are some slick spots.
