Route 8 In Shaler Reopens After Accident

SHALER (KDKA) -- A man and woman were thrown from their car after it went airborne on Route 8 in Shaler, closing the highway for several hours.

The injuries to the male driver and female passenger were serious, but they are expected to survive.

Police know that speed was likely a factor, but they're also trying to figure out if alcohol and a hit-and-run were also involved.

In the 1000-block of Route 8, witnesses initially told officers the sports car may have hit another vehicle farther up the road and then kept going extremely fast.

"There was a very high speed involved. Unable to maneuver a bend at that time, exceeded the critical speed off the curb, lost control, went up on a curb, continuing … dug in the ground which caused it to roll, slip, fly in the air," Shaler Police Sgt. Carl Funtal said.

Police found a beer in the car along with many loose beer cans.

The victims are believed to be in their 30's and are from the Hampton area.
