6 Injured In Parkway East Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A three-vehicle accident on the Parkway East left six people injured and brought the Thursday morning commute to a grinding halt.
According to officials, the accident happened around 8 a.m. between the Fort Pitt Bridge and the Grant Street off-ramp.
A total of six people were hurt, including a family of four in an SUV.
"They were hit from behind, spun out then hit into the jersey barrier, which then pinned their doors shut," EMS District Chief Ronald Curry said.
It took rescue crews about 40 minutes to get the family out, which required using the Jaws of Life.
A baby in a car seat was removed first.
"One child was in the car seat that was properly restrained. That child suffered no injuries that I can tell, very fortunate," Curry said.
Next, crews pulled a little girl from the vehicle, who walked to the ambulance.
The two adults in the SUV were placed on stretchers and the entire family was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital.
"Everyone was conscious and alert, minor to moderate injuries," Curry said.
The drivers in the other two vehicles were also transported to hospitals with minor injuries.
As for traffic, it was backed up significantly on both the Parkways North and West.
Delays stretched beyond the Interstate 79 Interchange on the Parkway West and it took some drivers over an hour to travel just a few miles.
The cause of the crash is under investigation and there is no word if charges will be filed.
