A Look Back At The Blizzard Of 1993
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Wednesday's snow squalls may have given some of us a sense of déjà vu. But the blizzard that blanketed Pittsburgh back on March 13, 1993, was one of a kind.
KDKA-TV meteorologist Dennis Bowman says it's not Pittsburgh's biggest snowfall, overall. But it was a one-day wonder.
"This is the most snow that ever fell in one day, from midnight to midnight - 23.6 inches of snow," Bowman said. "You were discouraged from going anywhere, though some people tried to get out and about."
March 13 also happened to be the Saturday of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Irish eyes weren't smiling, though, as city officials pondered the implications of a parade that almost wasn't.
Wednesday afternoon, the downtown Rotary Club welcomed 2013 parade Grand Marshal Glenn Cannon. The former Pittsburgh public safety director was a parade organizer 20 years ago, conferring with Mayor Sophie Masloff as the morning snow kept falling.
"Finally we made a decision, you know, at this late date, you know the parade starts at 10, there's no way we can notify everybody not to come," Cannon recalls. Whoever's here is here. We're going to go with the parade. We ended up having three bands of the 28 who came and marched."
Cannon says Pittsburgh was the "one and only."
"We were the only parade east of the Mississippi River that did not cancel," he added.
