School District Reverses Decision On Attending Prom Without Chickenpox Vaccine
IRWIN, Pa. (KDKA) — The Norwin School District has reversed its decision and now says they will let 9 students attend the high school prom.
The students were told they couldn't attend the prom because they didn't have their chickenpox vaccine.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health notified the Norwin School District that one student has the highly contagious virus, prompting school officials to pull student immunization records.
Thirty-three students were found to not have the vaccine, though at least one had been vaccinated later Thursday, after the school district sent a letter home to parents and posted the health department information on its website.
Of the 9 affected, 7 of the students decided to get the vaccine. Two girls decided not to get the vaccine because of religious reasons, and will be allowed to go to prom, but not return to school until they are vaccinated.
Kayla Grudowski is one of those who will now be allowed to attend the prom.
She says "It's my senior year, I've never been to a dance before, it's a really big thing."
Norwin's prom is Friday night.
