6 Dead, 14 Rescued From Philadelphia Building Collapse
PHILADELPHIA (KDKA) – At least six people were killed in a building collapse in Philadelphia.
Rescue crews worked through the night looking for survivors in the rubble.
So far, 14 people have been rescued, but officials said there's still more work to be done.
The four-story building collapsed Wednesday with a thunderous boom, hurling bricks and debris onto a nearby Salvation Army Thrift Store in Center City.
The building was vacant and was being demolished. The latest survivor to be pulled from the rubble was a 61-year-old woman, who had been buried for more than 12 hours. She was last listed in critical condition.
Search and rescue crews continued to search for more victims throughout the night using buckets and their bare hands.
"What we're going to do is to be sure - we're going to do everything we possibly can. Philadelphia Fire Department and the Pennsylvania Task Force - these are experts at what they do. We will not stop and our efforts will not be impeded by anything. We will get the debris out -- that's what they call layering. We'll take layer after layer after layer off of the street and off of the scene, until we know for sure that there are no people there," Mayor Michael Nutter said.
Nutter said one man and five women are among the dead.
