5 Rescued During Flash Flooding In Elizabeth Township
ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Tamara Delmer's drive along Boston Hollow Road in Elizabeth Township took her on an unanticipated and unwanted journey Wednesday.
"We came around the bend and a wall of water came down and pushed the first car in front of me back onto me," Delmer said.
It was 1.6 inches of rain fall in less than an hour that contributed to major flooding of the nearby creek, covering Boston Hollow Road with two-and-a-half feet of water.
Allegheny County Emergency Management Chief Alvin Henderson says the swift water rescue team was brought in to get Delmer and the drivers trapped in four other cars to safety.
"[It] was pretty scary, especially when the railroad tie floated into the car," said Delmar.
As Delmer sat in her black Camaro powerless over the water rising to her window, she stayed on the line with 911.
"Our dispatchers at the 911 center were talking to those individuals, reassuring them that help was on the way," Henderson said.
The help did come, and within 30 minutes, all five people trapped in their cars were moved to safety.
Right down the road, cleanup - after the water receded - is underway for the third time in two weeks.
