4 Brownsville High School Students Seriously Injured In Route 40 Crash
BROWNSVILLE (KDKA) -- Four teenagers were ejected from a car Thursday night after it crashed along Route 40 in Brownsville, Fayette County.
The boys were all seriously injured, and emergency responders tell KDKA's Trina Orlando that the boys are lucky to be alive. Authorities say they believe that speed may have been a factor in the crash.
The mood was heavy Friday at Brownsville High School as word spread that four athletes were seriously injured in a crash.
"Everybody was quiet; they just didn't know what to say, and there was a lot of crying… just sad," said Alyssa Gyashion, a student.
Students identified the crash victims as senior Tyler Spohn, his freshman brother Nikko Spohn, freshman Devin Braddock, and sophomore Shane Roebuck.
All four boys play baseball. Braddock and Roebuck also play football.
The boys were leaving a college fair at the high school when officials say Tyler lost control on Route 40 and flipped the vehicle he was driving around 10 p.m. Thursday.
"It was literally carnage. I had car parts and glass all over the road," said Chief Clark Sealy, of the Brownsville Fire Department. "It was a very terrible scene to roll up on with four young men that were injured that bad."
Chief Sealy says the boys were ejected from the vehicle and lying on the road when the first emergency crews arrived. He and paramedic Joe Zosky quickly realized they knew the boys involved in the crash.
"It's difficult, anxiety levels increase, but you just have to do your job," said Zosky.
Back at the high school, friends are calling Tyler a hero. They say he was badly injured, but helped to pull his friends from the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.
All four boys were flown from the scene, two to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, one to Allegheny General Hospital and one to Children's Hospital.
All four boys are expected to recover, but have a long road ahead.
The fire chief praised all of the emergency responders for getting the boys help quickly. He says they were all at Pittsburgh hospitals within an hour of the crash.
