4-1-Zoo: Pitt Beats South Florida 67-55
PITTSBURGH — The trend continued Wednesday night, as players throughout No. 4 Pitt's lineup stepped up in the absence of Ashton Gibbs.
In turn, the Panthers beat South Florida, 67-55, to improve to a school best 11-1 record in Big East play.
Forward Talib Zanna was the first to make an impact, scoring 11 points in the first half. It was his largest offensive output since November and was needed as Nasir Robinson spent much of the opening 20 minutes on the bench with two fouls.
Pitt appeared to be on its way to another blowout win at the Petersen Events Center, but South Florida's Shaun Norlega hit two 3-pointers in the final 45 seconds of the first half to close Pitt's lead to 36-29 at halftime.
The Bulls carried that momentum in to the second half and closed to within a point, 43-32, with 11:42 to go. That's when Robinson made his mark on the game.
Robinson hit a jumper and followed with two layups as part of a 16-0 Pitt run to put the Panthers ahead, 59-42, with 2:06 to play. The Panthers cruised from there on, winning 67-55.
Zanna finished with 11 points and two rebounds while Robinson finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The usual suspects showed their faces as well. Brad Wanamaker scored 13 points and had five assists. Gilbert Brown also hit double figures, scoring 11 points and adding seven rebounds and four assists.
