4-1-Zoo: Pitt A Priority For Big 12
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) -- Now that Colorado, Nebraska and Texas A&M have all officially left the Big 12, the conference is looking to add to its member base.
Pitt, according to OrangeBloods.com, has become the top target along with BYU.
OrangeBloods.com reports that Pitt currently makes about $8 million in revenue right now in the Big East and, though AD Steve Pederson says he's happy in the Big East, the university could gross as much as $17-$20 million in a move to the Big 12.
"Two sources told me today Pittsburgh continues to move up as a Big 12 target, and may even be moving into the lead. Pitt AD Steve Pederson is sending out signals the Panthers are content in the Big East."
The University of Pittsburgh won't comment on these reports and issued a statement earlier in the week that said it would be foolish to speculate at this time.
As I said before, it's impossible to predict what will happen to Pitt, or any other school, in conference expansion. However, it would seem to be a pretty odd move for Pitt to join a conference that's crumbling — the Big 12.
Many across the country bash the Big East for its low level of competition and poor performances in marquee games, but it looks more stable than the Big 12 at this point, especially with the addition of TCU next year.
The Big East is hoping for a TV deal in the coming years that will pay its member schools significantly more as well.
Right now, Pitt and the Big East look to be in good shape right where they are.
