4-1-Zoo: Navy To Join Big East in 2015
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Big East continued its overhaul Tuesday, as Navy announced it will join the conference as a football-only member in 2015, according to a report by CBSSports.com.
That means the Midshipmen will join a conference after over 130 years of football independence.
The university told CBSSports.com that independence appears to be too hard to maintain in football moving forward with conference expansion, and that the Big East appears strong in the future. The Big East will allow Navy to keep traditional rivalries with Army, Air Force and Notre Dame, and the Army-Navy game will remain the season finale.
Navy joins Boise State and San Diego State as football-only members. The Broncos and Aztecs will join the conference in 2013.
Other schools that will join in 2013 as all-sports members are Houston, SMU and Central Florida.
As of right now, the Big East will be comprised of the previously mentioned teams and current Big East members Cincinnati, Rutgers, Louisville, UConn and South Florida.
Pitt (ACC), Syracuse (ACC) and West Virginia (Big 12) are expected to remain in the Big East through the 2013-14 school year before leaving for other conferences.
