31st Street Bridge To Reopen To Route 28 Traffic
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The 31st Street Bridge has been closed to Route 28 traffic for a long time, but soon that will be coming to an end.
Closed in March of 2011, drivers have spent two and a half years in detour purgatory.
But on Monday, the intersection and the connections with Route 28 will reopen more than six months ahead of the original schedule and several weeks ahead of the revised schedule.
Route 28 drivers will once again have to watch out for merging traffic.
"Motorists are going to have to be patients and allow individuals to merge onto the roadway," said PennDOT District 11 spokesperson Steve Cowan.
In the new intersection, Rialto Street will remain closed through the winter.
"There is still a 30-day traffic signal test that will occur," said Cowan.
With the reopening, PennDOT's focus now turns to the final phase of the project, the part near the Heinz plant and old St. Nick's Church property.
Orange will again sprout on the road soon.
"Reduce it to a single northbound lane," said Cowan.
Look for the merge point to be in the area as you come out of the North Side on to Route 28.
Cowan: "Early December, I would say."
KDKA's John Shumway: "Down to a single lane northbound?"
Cowan: "Correct."
