1 Dead, Several Injured In East Pittsburgh Crashes

EAST PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One person is dead and several others were injured, including emergency responders, in two accidents that part of Route 30 Friday night.

Route 30 near the Westinghouse Bridge at East Pittsburgh was closed late into the night. Crews first closed it down around 6:30 p.m.

The cars involved in the initial accident came close to the rear of a home on Grandview Avenue.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office confirms that one of the victims of the accident died. The Medical Examiner's Office identifies him as 86-year-old Albert Muhlenbecher. He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital.

They say he may have crossed the median of Route 30, causing two other cars to collide.

"All of a sudden I heard 'boom, boom,' a tremendous three thuds, and it shook my whole house. It was a tremendous thud," said Earl Kauffman, a witness.

The accident initially involved three cars and ended up very close to Kauffmann's home, which faces Grandview Avenue.

He says he could tell the driver of a red car was unresponsive, the driver of the white car was in need of medical attention and the driver of a black car was able to exit his vehicle.

But as medical emergency crews arrived, there was another accident.

"As the ambulance… everybody was getting out of the vehicles, I guess the guy forgot to put it in park," said Kauffman. "The ambulance had hit the ambulance driver, I guess. I heard 'thud, thud.' I turned around, the guy's rolling on the ground, the ambulance is rolling towards the red car. Me and the cop were looking at each other. I went to go towards the ambulance. He beat me to it, slammed on the brakes, put it in park, turned around and the guy's lying right behind my home and he was injured."

The conditions of those injured have not been released.

But those involved in original accident reportedly suffered very serious injuries.
