3 Suspects Sought In McKees Rocks Armed Robbery
MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) – Police are searching for three suspects after an armed robbery in McKees Rocks Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, it was business as usual at Pierogies Plus on Island Avenue, but it was a terrifying night for one employee.
"One held a gun to the employee's head and demanded that he open the register," McKees Rocks Police Chief Robert Cifrulak said.
Things turned even more dangerous for the overnight cook when the suspects turned their attention and demands to a safe.
"When the employee couldn't open the safe, one of the suspects that was armed, fired the gun, fired a round into the safe in an attempt to open the safe," Cifrulak said.
An officer got to the store as the robbery was underway around 11 p.m. Tuesday, but the three masked men were able to get away.
"The one that I guess was acting as the lookout saw the officer. All three retreated, jumped out the back window and ran through the railroad yard," Cifrulak said.
Cifrulak said he was surprised the men weren't hurt in the jump. While they didn't catch the suspects, police did find something else.
"We found the weapon, the weapon that was used. It was located directly below the window. We found a couple of items of clothing. All of these items are being processed for prints and DNA," Cifrulak said.
Employee Gerri Klepal says it was scary when she first heard the news, but in two decades of business there have never been any issues.
"I've felt safe here all the time. We've never had any problems," Klepal said.
On top of the evidence recovered not far from the store, police are also hoping surveillance video helps in their investigation.
