3 Arrested In Connection With Death Of W&J Football Player
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Tim McNerney, 21, was beaten to death back Oct. 4, 2012. Since that time, police and investigators have desperately tried to figure or what happened and who was responsible for the young Washington & Jefferson football player's demise.
On Tuesday, police announced that they now have multiple suspects in custody.
"It was only in the past few weeks that a break occurred in this case and the ability to advance this case existed," Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone said.
The suspects have been identified as24-year-old Eric Wells, 23-year-old Adam Hankins and 22-year-old Troy Simmons.
"We feel it was a mere encounter between these two groups. We don't feel like - even at this point in the investigation - that the actors were actively seeking to go out and commit a crime at that point. Things just escalated the way they did. We've always felt robbery was the motive," Lt. Dan Stanek said.
Whatever the basis for the deadly assault, the event has changed some people's minds about how they view the town and their sense of security.
"Everywhere you go, you have to be looking over your shoulder to make sure nobody is going to pop out of the bushes and kill you," Nancy Shorraw said.
Shorraw worries about her safety and is also concerned for McNerney's mother.
"I'm a mom and if you lose your child, it doesn't matter how old they are. It's always going to be with you, but it's good they caught them," Shorraw said.
All three suspects remain in the Washington County Jail and are facing numerous charges including, criminal homicide.
