2 Injured In Ross Twp. Crash

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Crews had to cut a woman out of a vehicle in Ross Township after a Wednesday morning accident.

According to police, a car and box truck collided at the intersection of Perry Highway and Cemetery Lane around 6:30 a.m.

The driver of a box truck lost control as he tried to make a right turn from the interstate onto Perrysville Highway.

"It appears from the physical evidence as well as the witnesses on scene that a Schwan's truck weighing approximately 33,000 pounds was traveling too fast for the roadway ," Ross Township Police Sgt. Benjamin Dripps said.

As the truck flipped on its side, it fell on a Toyota sedan.

"Absolutely crushing it," Dripps said.

The female driver of the car was trapped. In order to get her out of the vehicle, crews had to use the Jaws of Life.

"She was alive," Dripps said. "Serious injuries, but non-life-threatening and I don't know that you could ever have a bread truck fall on you and consider yourself lucky, but in this case I think she has to."

The driver of the truck was trapped as well, but his injuries were not serious.

"It looks like he may have blacked out," Dripps said. "We don't know what the reason for that is. Was there a pre-existing medical condition, drugs or alcohol? Those are all a part of our investigation and we hope to find that out."

The hundreds of pounds of food on the truck were donated to local food banks, churches, the Red Cross and other charities.

The truck driver could face several charges.
