2 Injured In Hill District Shootings
HILL DISTRICT (KDKA) – Two people were injured in separate shootings in the Hill District early Tuesday morning.
According to police, shots were fired near the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Chauncey Drive around 3 a.m.
When police arrived, they found a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.
About an hour later, another man - also 20 - walked into UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with a gunshot wound to his ankle.
No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation continues.
Meanwhile, people who live in the Hill District say the violence makes it difficult to lead a good life, and set a good example for children.
Christopher Hall and Jevon Taylor, both of the Hill District, say they are trying to make it and make it out to bigger and better things. Hall is a full-time student, and Taylor works full time.
"They see that drive to get out, you know what I mean, and they wonder like what is it? He thinks he's better than me, or he's doing this different or whatnot, so I want to try to get at him," said Hall. "If I'm walking to go catch the bus to school or if I'm walking to the store or something like that, you're right, I could be a target for anything."
"It didn't really hit me hard until I turned 21 and I had a friend walk up to me and was like, 'Hey, you're 21, you made it,'" Taylor added.
For now, Taylor, who has three children, says he e is absolutely intent on being something he's never known - a good father. His baby girl's name is tattooed on this arm as a reminder of what really matters.
"There's always hope," he says.
That's what both Taylor and Hall hope to teach young people - there are alternatives to hate and violence.
"We're all here searching, reaching for anything to try and fill a void, you're already losing out," Taylor said.
