2 Charged After Shooting, Fight Downtown

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Two people are now facing charges following a fight and shooting outside of an upscale steakhouse Friday afternoon in the middle of a busy Downtown Pittsburgh street.

The shooting happened just before 4 p.m. in the 300-block of Fifth Avenue just outside of the Capital Grille. All three people involved were treated for injuries.

Police say they have arrested 24-year-old Antonio Peterson and 22-year-old Hassan Howze, both of Overbrook.

Howze is facing aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy charges. Peterson is charged with aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy and carrying a concealed firearm without a license.

According to police, it all started when the suspects met the 22-year-old victim at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street after leaving a business. The three men know one another.

Police say the victim walked away from an altercation, but the suspects followed him north on Fifth Avenue toward the intersection of Wood Street. The three then got into a fight on the sidewalk outside of the restaurant.

During the fight, police say Howze is accused of shooting the victim in the shoulder. Investigators say the victim managed to wrestle the gun from Howze and then shot him in the upper rear leg.

An Allegheny County Sheriff's Deputy on patrol took all three suspects into custody with the help of an off-duty police officer who was eating in the Capital Grille.

Police are giving a lot of credit Sgt. Kevin Faulds of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department. They say Sgt. Faulds just happened to drive up on the scene and stopped it from being a lot worse.

"He did a tremendous job of rolling right into the middle of it," said Lt. Kevin Kraus, of Pittsburgh Police. "Three people, active shooting situation and he certainly should be commended for his efforts."

Police also recovered a .40-caliber pistol and a .32-caliber pistol at the scene.

The police have not identified the victim but say he is from Bellevue. He was treated at UPMC Mercy Hospital for his shoulder wound, questioned at police headquarters and then released.

Meanwhile, Howze was taken to Allegheny General Hospital where he is listed in serious condition. Peterson was also treated at Allegheny General for injuries he sustained during the fight.

The investigation continues. Police say they interviewed several witnesses at the scene and are looking at surveillance video.
