Mother, Young Son Killed In Washington Co, Fire
BUFFALO TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- Two people were killed in a late Sunday night fire in Washington County.
According to emergency dispatchers, the fire started at a home on Wigginton Road in Buffalo Township around 11 p.m.
The victims have been identified as 28-year-old Lisa Hewitt and her 5-year-old son, Timothy.
"It was too engulfed in flames this time that nobody could gave helped them," Edwin Medlen said.
The victims were Medlen's niece and nephew.
Officials reported Lisa was on the phone with 911 screaming for help because she was trapped.
"They were great people, couldn't ask for any better," Medlen said. "Timmy used to sit on my lap from the time he was old enough to crawl. She was a great mom. He was a great dad."
Tim Hewitt Sr. was at work when the fire started and this is the latest tragedy to happen to him.
"He's had a step-son pass away from SIDS and a daughter pass away of SIDS and now, this," Medlen said.
Fire investigators were on scene before family arrived. Another potential tragedy was averted when seconds after they left the structure, it collapsed.
The family of Lisa and Timothy Jr. said they'll stand by Hewitt Sr. during this hard time.
"His son and his wife, he's more or less lost everything. I don't know how much more the guy can take," Medlen said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators are looking at a wood-burning stove as a possible origin point.
