2 Arrested After Botched South Side Burglary

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - Two people were arrested following a botched break-in attempt on the South Side Wednesday morning.

According to police, the incident happened in the 1400-block of East Carson Street around 3:30 a.m.

A person driving by saw two men trying to open the door to an apartment building and called police.

"We responded to that area and found two men inside the establishment. They were taken into custody. They had forced their way in and two firearms were recovered in the establishment," Pittsburgh Police Lt. Bill Mathias said.

After they got the door open, police said they headed up the steps. They had guns, duct tape and bad intentions, but they also had bad directions.

During the course of their investigation, it was determined that the men did not mean to try and break into the apartment. They thought the door was the entrance to a music studio that had thousands of dollars worth of equipment and instruments.

"It's our belief they were actually looking for a music studio that was around the back of the business and they weren't sure where it was. So, they kicked in the front door of the apartment building," Lt. Mathias said.

However, they found two guns and one was carrying armor-piercing rounds.

"Two handguns, one was an FN 57 with body armor-piercing rounds inside." Lt. Mathias said. "If they'd a found the right apartment of if they decided they weren't going to go out without a fight, it could have been bad for us."

Both are in custody and are facing a number of charges, including breaking and entering, burglary and weapons violations.

"One's a former felon with current, active warrants at this time," Lt. Mathias said.

Both are being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

A third individual, who may have also been involved, remains on the loose.

The man who owns the recording studio told KDKA-TV's Ross Guidotti that he is very shaken up by all this. He also indicated he will continue to produce records, but not at that location.
