1st Chardon Shooting Victim Laid To Rest
CHARDON, Ohio (CBS) -- Just days after gunfire erupted inside of a high school cafeteria in Ohio, one of the victims was laid to rest.
Just a couple blocks away from where 16-year-old Danny Parmertor was fatally shot at Chardon High School earlier this week, mourners filed into his funeral Saturday, past a human chain of supporters that stretched as far as the eye could see.
"We want to show our support to the family, and say that we're sorry this happened, but we are here for you," said one mourner.
So they stood, huddled and hugging their children. There were easily more than a thousand, elbow to elbow, pledging to love the Parmertors and all victims of the tragedy.
"That's what this community is telling everyone, that we are one community with one heart," said Helen Pero, a Chardon High School parent.
Parmertor is being remembered as a computer whiz who loved Xbox and skiing.
"If they need anything we're here for them, and we'll be behind them 100 percent," added another mourner.
Word of a bizarre protest from out-of-towners never materialized.
"Make sure if there is any negativity, that we show we are a loving group and we're here just to support the family," said Debbie Boehlefeld, of Mentor, Ohio.
Red ribbons on pretty much every upright pole were impossible for the funeral procession to miss as were signs shoring up the sentiment, "Families, our hearts and our prayers are with you."
It hasn't even been a week yet since the shooting at Chardon High School early Monday morning, and now the community has to bury two more of their own before the next week is out.
