People Remember Murdered 92-Year-Old
CALIFORNIA, Pa. (KDKA) -- About 150 people gathered Monday night to pay tribute to 92 year-old Evelyn Stepko, but two members of the community were missing – the two neighbors now charged with her murder.
A father and son are facing charges. David J. McClelland, a part-time police officer, and his dad, David A. McClelland, are behind bars in the Washington County Jail.
Police say Stepko had a considerable amount of cash in her home and lived in fear after four burglaries. They also say she suspected the older McClelland.
Police say a bloody latex glove at the crime scene has a fingerprint that matches David A. McClelland.
The older McClelland spoke to KDKA after the murder, telling Harold Hayes, "It's disgusting to hear that somebody had stabbed her. It was like somebody stabbed me."
McClelland's niece, Dolores Sprowls, says McClelland had said something similar to her and now she calls it "unbelievable."
The crowd at the vigil sang and lit candles.
Stepko's cousin brought photos of when Stepko was young. She wanted people to know how sweet her cousin was, and says she sits and cries when she considers how she died.
