13-Year-Old Hit By Car In Allegheny Township
ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Police are now investigating whether a grandfather who accidentally hit his 13-year-old granddaughter was driving with a suspended license.
The police chief in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, says the girl got off her school bus and sat Indian-style in the driveway with her back to the road as she waited for her 62-year-old grandfather, Phillip Zaffuto, to show up.
Allegheny Township Police Chief John Fontaine says Zaffuto, who was coming to pick her up, turned off Shearsburg Road and hit her.
She suffered head injures and was flown to Children's Hospital where she was listed in critical but stable condition.
Chief Fontaine calls the incident an "unfortunate accident."
However, he also says an initial check shows Zaffuto may have been driving with a suspended license. Chief Fontaine says he will have to check PennDOT's records to verify the suspension and find out the reason why.
The chief says if his license was suspended, the grandfather could be charged with a summary offense.
He says the man was very distraught after the accident.
