13-Year-Old Girl Shot In Morningside
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A 13-year-old girl is in the hospital after she was accidentally shot in the leg in Pittsburgh's Morningside neighborhood Thursday night.
The incident happened in a home in the 1000-block of Jancey Street just after 8 p.m.
According to police, a 22-year-old man brought his high-powered rifle to the home to have it cleaned by the girl's uncle. Somehow, the weapon went off and the bullet hit the little girl's leg.
Police say the 22-year-old initially left the house after the shot was fired.
"He was visibly upset," said Lt. Jason Lando, of Pittsburgh Police. "He's friends with the family and he was very upset that he hurt the young girl and he wanted to go home and get his mother. He came back with his mother and he turned himself in. He was taken into custody without incident."
The girl was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment.
She is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, police took the 22-year-old man into custody. Police have not released his identity.
A warrant was out for his arrest in Westmoreland County.

He is charged with recklessly endangering another person -- a lesser charge, since police say it was an accidental shooting.
"He's not being charged with aggravated assault, which would be something we would charge, you know, someone who did an intentional shooting," said Lando. "He's just being charged with recklessly endangering another person, for basically the careless handling of the firearm."
