1,000 Kids Receive New Backpacks For School
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As parents around the region kick off their back-to-school shopping, some students already have a jump start.
Hundreds of backpacks were passed out around Allegheny County Monday morning.
For some, it came at time when the price of going back to school is going up.
The line was long and the decision was tough for some of the youngsters.
The Salvation Army worked with volunteers from Huntington Bank to pack about 1,000 new backpacks for students from across the area.
The kids did not just get backpacks. They also received some school supplies including, a few notepads and pencils.
Using a selection of items found at local retailers, Huntington said the cost of school supplies and other needs for elementary school students went up from $474 to $530. For middle school students the cost went up from $545 to $681.
For the students, at least one thing is now off the list. Believe it or not, they claim they're excited to go back to class too.
"Now I'm going to Edgewood Primary. That's the best school up there," one student said.
