Suspect Dead After Pittsburgh Police Officer Shot On North Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police say a suspect is dead after a Pittsburgh police officer was shot on the North Side.

A Pittsburgh police officer was responding to a robbery at a Boost Mobile store on East Ohio Street on Thursday night, sources say.

An unmarked police car with four detectives pulled over a Lexis with two black males inside, officials say.

County police said Pittsburgh police smelled marijuana. They asked the driver to get out of the car. He complied.

The passenger, Elijah Brewer, a 25-year-old from Pittsburgh, scuffled with police.

A shootout began.

The passenger fired shots and hit the officer in the hip, sources say.

The officer returned fire, sources say, and Brewer was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital.

The medical examiner said he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the trunk and extremities.

It is not clear who fired the shots and how many were fired.

"A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered at the scene in the right hand of the deceased," Allegheny County Police Superintendant Coleman McDonough said. "Based on our preliminary investigations, it's apparent the deceased fired at least two rounds at Pittsburgh detectives."

The driver is also in custody, his identity has not been made available.

Police say the officer is in stable condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

Police say the officer is alert and communicating. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert, Mayor Bill Peduto and members of the officer's family are with him ta the hospital.

"I think this is an example of how dangerous that the officers' jobs are. ... We are very lucky and fortunate tonight that the officer is in good condition," Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the county police, as per Pittsburgh police policies.

Brewer was on parole for aggravated assault and weapons violations.
